M.E. Dusty Bender,
Professor/Department Chair

I am Department Chair in the Social Studies Department at Central Baptist College.  I started along this path after a three year stint in the U.S. Army, by taking an A.A. in General Studies from Central Baptist College in 1977, followed by a B.S.E. (1979) and M.A. (1989) from the University of Central Arkansas.  I began teaching at Central Baptist College in August 1979.   After some post-graduate study at the University of Arkansas, I settled into my Ph.D. program at the University of Memphis, and received my degree in 1997.  In addition to my regular teaching duties in the traditional program, I teach in the PACE and distance education programs.  I have also enjoyed the privilege of serving as an Adjunct Professor of History at the University of Central Arkansas for approximately 23 years.

I am a member of the American Historical Association, the Council of European Historians, the Arkansas Historical Association, the Illinois Council for Social Studies, and the Civil War Trust.  In the past I have also been a member or on the board of the Faulkner County Historical Society, the Arkansas Association of College History Teachers, the Oral History Association, and the Southern Historical Association.  Other professional activities include serving as a textbook contributor and on the Editorial Advisory Board for the Collegiate Press’s The Sociological Outlook:  A Text with Readings (3rd edition) and, most recently, serving as an advisor/contributor on a Arkansas Department of Education committee evaluating Arkansas Social Studies Curriculum Standards under the Common Core.

My publications include a popular history of Central Baptist College and articles on Central Baptist College published in The Encyclopedia of Arkansas History and Culture and the Faulkner County [Historical Society] Facts and Fiddlins.  Most recently I have submitted a manuscript to the Phillips County Historical Society, detailing the prison experience of a Confederate officer captured when Arkansas Post fell.  I have also addressed numerous groups such as the Faulkner Country Historical Society, the Arkansas Historical Society, the Old Bloomingdale [IL] Homeowners Association, public school classes and other groups.

I am an active member of the Antioch Baptist Church in Conway where I serve as deacon, co-teacher of the Andrew Bible Study class, and facilitate a Sunday evening small group in our home.

My hobbies include “piddlin’” on our mini-farm in Vilonia, woodworking, and working on our vehicles.  Hopefully, in the not too distant future my wife and I will engage in long-awaited travel and sightseeing.

I am married to Paula Haney Bender and we have 6 children and I am also proud to be called “Boppa” by Callie and Jordyn.
