Central Baptist College to Offer Men's Wrestling and Women's Golf
Central Baptist College is excited to announce the addition of men’s wrestling and women’s golf to its athletic programs for the 2010-2011 academic year. This will bring the total number of intercollegiate sports programs offered at CBC to twelve.
The CBC athletic staff, headed by Athletic Director Lyle Middleton, met with CBC President Terry Kimbrow and other administrators and staff to discuss the possibility of adding men’s wrestling and women’s golf. They voted unanimously to recommend the two sports to the CBC Board of Trustees. The board met on Saturday, February 27th and voted unanimously to accept the recommendation.
According to CBC President Terry Kimbrow, the decision to add wrestling began with a meeting with Greg Hatcher, president of the Arkansas Wrestling Association (AWA). Kimbrow explains that from that meeting CBC became aware that approximately 50 high schools in Arkansas offer wrestling as a sanctioned sport, but only one other college in Arkansas offers wrestling on an intercollegiate level.
Mr. Hatcher and the AWA will assist CBC by underwriting the cost of the customized logo wrestling mat and the wrestling uniforms. Mr. Hatcher will also assist the college in the search for a wrestling coach. “A search will begin immediately for a wrestling coach. We are anxious to get started recruiting from the nearly 50 high school wrestling teams in Arkansas and in other states with wrestling programs,” CBC President Kimbrow stated.
Mike Moyer, President of the National Wrestling Coaches Association will work with CBC Athletic Director Lyle Middleton in the scheduling of matches for the first couple years and athletes will compete according to the NAIA regulations.
Women’s golf was suspended at CBC a couple of years ago for lack of interest. However, the men’s program has been extremely successful and has competed in several national championships. “It is time to bring the ladies golf team back,” Kimbrow said. Men’s golf coach and CBC Athletic Director Lyle Middleton will coach the women’s golf team.
CBC joined the NAIA conference in 2009 and currently sponsors men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, softball, volleyball, men’s golf, men’s and women’s soccer and men’s and women’s cross country.
